Questions
and Answers about the SchoolGrants Bring Home the
Bacon Listserv
|
What is a listserv?
Joining a listserv like "Bring Home the Bacon"
allows you to communicate with other subscribers via e-mail
by sending your message to one easy address. Likewise,
when other subscribers send a message to the list's e-mail
address, that message goes to all subscribers. This
means that there may be days when you will get many e-mail
messages if a topic of particular interest is being
discussed on the list. |
Is there a digest version available?
Yes. A digest combines all of the day's individual
posts into one nightly email. Many subscribers find
this a convenient way to keep up with the list without
receiving many individual posts. A digest does delay receipt
of the information posted and sometimes makes it a little
more difficult to respond to threads on the
list.
Bring Home the Bacon digests are available in either HTML or
Text format. I recommend the HTML version if
possible. Many people have their email clients set up
to send HTML posts. When such posts are sent to the
listserv, those who receive text-formatted digests will
receive many lines of HTML coding. This can be very
disconcerting and make reading the digests difficult.
If you wish to receive the digest version,
please complete the
comments form. You must
provide your email address, first and last name,
and which version of the digest you wish to receive in the
comments section of the form.
If not stated, you will be subscribed to the HTML Digest. Please state in your email that you
wish to receive the daily digest and not
individual postings.
|
Can I advertise on the BHTB listserv?
You may mention services you offer but the listserv
is not the right place to advertise goods and
services you have available for sale. BHTB was created
for educators to have a place to exchange ideas, tips, and
grant and fundraising opportunities. It is a list where
colleagues can collaborate with one another as they attempt
to provide supplemental programs for their K-12 students,
classrooms, and districts. |

Bring
Home the Bacon Welcome Letter |
Welcome to the SchoolGrants "Bring Home
the Bacon" e-mail list!
Please save this welcome message for future reference!
I would appreciate it if you would submit a brief biography to
the list so we can all get to know one another. Please include
your name, where you work, the general area of the country where
you're located, your grant-writing experience, and anything else
you wish to tell us. (If you wish, you can see previously submitted biographies by visiting the list archives.) Rather than
hitting "reply to sender" to this message when you submit your
bio, please begin a new message addressed to bringhomebacon@netpals.lsoft.com. If you "reply to sender" the
message comes directly to me and I will forward it on to the list.
I hope that there will be a true community spirit of sharing on
the list and ask that all responses be made in a friendly and
helpful way - we are all here to learn and to share what we've
learned... the hard way sometimes...to give ourselves and others
the opportunity to benefit from what we've done right and wrong...to put *turf* aside...and to participate in a real spirit
of give and take, for the common good. The real payoff
belongs to the children we all serve.
The list no
longer allows
attachments so
the threat of
receiving a
virus through
Bring Home the
Bacon is
removed.
If someone
wants to share
an attachment
with all the
members, send
it to me
and I will post it to SchoolGrants where it can be
downloaded by those interested in it. You must
fully describe the attachment being sent in the body of the
message. I do not routinely open attachments that are
sent to me since I get many viruses sent to me when people's
machines are infected.
Below are pertinent addresses for the SchoolGrants' Bring

List archives will be available to all subscribers to the
list. You can access them at http://netpals.lsoft.com/archives/bringhomebacon.html
Please take a moment to review the following list guidelines.
They have been developed over the course of time as the list has
grown and as suggestions have been made by subscribers.
"Bring Home the Bacon" List Guidelines
1. No question is a "dumb" or stupid one, so please - if you have
a question, ask! The Bacon list has some very knowledgeable and
helpful individuals on it.
2. The Bacon list is set up so that, when you hit "reply to sender", your response goes to the entire list. If you wish to
respond privately to a message posted to the Bacon list, you must
copy and paste the email address of the person to whom you wish to
respond into the "To" field of your message.
3. When you respond to a message on the list, please delete all
but the pertinent parts of the message to which you are responding. Extending this courtesy is especially nice for those
listmembers who receive the digest version of the Bacon list.
When you leave all the footers and prior messages intact, they
have to scroll through a bunch of messages they have already read.
Those who receive the digest version of the list also need to be
aware and especially careful of this - please delete the digest to
which you are responding or you will repost the entire thing to
the list again. It might be easiest, especially for our digest
subscribers, to set up the Bacon list address (bringhomebacon@netpals.lsoft.com) in your "Address Book" and
simply begin a new message each time.
4. Please do not send such responses as "ok", "I agree", or "thanks" to the entire list. This type response is more
appropriately sent to the individual to whom the sentiment is
directed.
5. On the other hand, if your response is related to grants or
fund-raising or supplemental programs, please do send it to the
entire list. It is by active participation by all subscribers
that we all learn and that we are most able to offer input.
6. If you wish
to unsubscribe
from the list
or have
complaints
about the way
the list is
being run, you
should not
send those
messages to
the entire
subscriber
base. The list
members cannot
help you with
administrative
issues.
You can unsubscribe yourself from the list by clicking
here. Simply hit send on the blank email message.
Subscribe and
unsubscribe instructions are at the bottom of every post sent
to BHTB.
7. When posting questions to the list, it is helpful if you tell
us where you are located, a little about your project, how much
funding you desire, when you'd like to begin your project, etc.
The more information you can give us, the more likely it is that
we will be able to offer suggestions.
8. The Bacon list is currently semi-moderated. Only posts that are
on-topic - related to projects / programs / grants / K-12 education
are approved to go to the entire list.
9. Make sure your virus protection program is up to date. The
WScript.KakWorm has been making the rounds on email lists lately. This particular
virus affects only Outlook Express 5, from what I understand.
A clean-up program for the KAK virus is located at: http://www.pchell.com/internet/kakworm.shtml. From this site,
you can also get a patch from Microsoft that will make your machine invulnerable to the worm. Still, if you are participating
on e-mail lists, it is important to have up-to-date virus protection software on your computer!
[Threat of virus infection is greatly reduced on the Bacon
list due to the fact that it does not accept attachments.]
We're looking forward to the sharing of successes, tips, suggestions, grant opportunities ... if it is grant-related, it is
appropriate for posting on this list! Your questions are also
welcome here, and the task of answering questions belongs to us
all.
